I would say specialist roles, or a diverse range of options that require certain people to play the game differently to achieve a win..

Interested to see what other people think makes a game a good clan/competition game.

Game needs to be
- fun
- require team work to achieve a goal
- Have some sort of anti cheat protection built in
- specific roles for players

and be Battlefield Vietnam :)

ROFL @ NWM, commy and cycs

I think that team play is important (whether thru different ppl taking different roles or just acting as cohesive unit (BF-V looks like it could be all these), anti cheat and FAITHFULL clan members /me look at cycs ;)

It MUST be classed based to allow for different styles of players and there has to be a large diversity in those classes.

Yeah those IGN movies are good. I donwloaded them all a few days ago. They are from a beta version but still show basically how it runs etc. The terrian engine wasnt finished in those movies, but still looks pretty good.

The one thing that makes a great clan game is really quite obvious.

Think about it.

Got it yet?

Come on!

Yes , the people you play with!

If you play with good fun people with a good attitude then ANY game is fun to play multiplayer. It's the reason why CS pretty much sucked for me, because on the whole the attitude of CS players sucked. It seemed to attract the younger kids, hell bent on winning, and cursing and tormenting other players, and cheating was (as it seemed) the norm, the only way to get ahead (for them).

Play CS with a bunch of your clan mates, real friends at a LAN, and it's actually a bit of fun. So yeah, the most important element of a good clan game is purely WHO you play them with.

Other than that I would say different classes, but it must have balance, so that one class isn't too powerful, one where skill levels can be honed constantly, not just achieved in 5 minutes or even 5 weeks of play.

Cheers,
Max

good post max. I guess that is requirement number 1.

Yeah OFP is still played on OGN (Netspace) and has quite a few still playing it.. The 1.94 netcode is fine, but that clunky interface, and the lack of a join-in-progress option relegated it to one of the games that had real potential but never fulfilled it due to some basic oversights.

OFP2 has about 5 times the staff working on it, and I think they have learnt a lot from VBS (The military sim version of OFP) so hopfully they learn from their mistakes.

I agree with most of what MadMax has said.

C&C Generals was quite fun and still is at LANs but I got sick of it pretty quickly online. People tend to just set you up by creating games with maps they know and the games over in 5 mins. It wouldn't be so bad if there weren't as many shit heads that played as well - they seem to be arrogant cock suckers for the most part. Especially the Germans...it must be German gamers because the Germans I work with are pretty cool.

The only other thing a good MP game has to be is not TFC ;)

Something else I thought of is quite obvious too, which is smooth netcode (not sure if that was mentioned earlier) but importantly that having a faster connection doesn't give you too big an advantage over those with a slower connection. So netcode that somehow allows for different speeds not having major advantages.

Case in point concing is so much easier and more consistent for people with a better ping and an obvious advantage over the less fortunate.

OFP was near impossible to play multiplayer, on dialup.

I agree with what you are saying Max to a point BUT I think that noone is going to look at coding to produce equal results at 200-300ping with lpb'ers as dialup is seeing its last days even in Oz with $29 a month BB available now and of course that price and cheaper in the US but I would like them to still look at that equalisation of play between people pinging 15 to those pinging 90-100 which I believe is much more relevent to today.
