THE PICTURE OF an Nvidia NV40 that wibbled its way onto the Web, has worried fans of the fabless chipmaker. The picture showing a card with two power connectors has Nvidians worried that this means the card will be as noisy as the not-so-quiet, dustbusting NV30.
Our friend confirms that NV40 is going to be a two-slot card, but it won't be noisy one, we're assured. Nvidia will use a similar approach as it used with its NV38, Geforce FX 5950 Ultra card; that was a two-slot solution as a reference design. But we heard that this time around it won't be so easy to modify the cooling to get such a fat card into a single PC slot.

Nvidia sure learned its lesson with its NV30. And now its partners have their eyes full of hope trained on its upcoming NV40. The card looks good and last thing that Nvidia needs is the thing whirring and clanking about like some demented gerbil on a wheel, while all we're trying to do is frag the bad guys.

Still, many Nvidia partners are very close to jumping ship to ATI, we hear.

The biggest ones have learned that they can pretty much do as they like, thanks to the way Asus showed its muscle in offering cards sporting chips from whomever it fancies.

MSI just made a fair few bob supplying German giant Medion with kit – including home-made Radeon 9800XXL cards – for Aldi supermarkets.
