I bought a new denon stereo amp 2 weeks ago with no 5.1 bullshit.. pretty much just a big ass volume knob and bass and treble knobs ,while using my comp through it i blew it up or it was faulty...either way it shit itself.

Instead of just replacing it i ended up upgrading to the model above it with a bit more grunt...

With the one that blew i was having to run it at atleast 3/4 of the max volume to get the same output as my oldie i replaced....

They asked me to bring my speakers in incase they were at fault and they ran them with the new beefier amp...at just over a 1/4 playing a cd they cranked..much more and the speakers woulda been toast..so no problem..i get home set it all up...and playing a cd through my DVD player...i get loud as all hell sound...but if i run my turntables through it...i need to up the volume on my amp to get the same volume....and with the comp i have to have it back to 3/4 to get it really loud like i like it....

Now i'm guessing that the problem is with the output levels of the 3 items....the turntables i can live with but i'm worried i'm going to fry the amp again if i run my comp at that volume level. And considering i've already possibly baked an $800 amp i cant see them letting me use my warranty too many more times with the one ive upgraded to if it keeps happening.

What i would like to know is if there is much difference between soundcards output wise...i currently having an diamond mx300 relic and would like to know if the audigy cards are any louder...or i think theres that hercules card..a little old now but it had a seperate box that had a heap of inputs and outputs...i thought that might have a seperate pre-amp or sumthin.

Any help on the situation would be appreciated.

hmm well normal LINE LEVEL sound inputs are 250mV (from memory, havent done this for some time) and your PC output should have a LL out, or if its old.. maybe a speaker out (often based around a 3W amp on the sound card).

Turn Tables have a far more sensitive input.. only 25mV, so never ever plug that into another input, as you will likely either shit yourself, the noise is so loud, or you might damage your amp.

With regards to mixed outputs levels with volume, well that really is a matter of adjusting your WAVE and MASTER volume on the PC, with the volume level from the amp. so there are 3 things to adjust to get that at a level you feel happy with.

In relation to the low volume out from a DVD player, well thats not uncommon unfortunately, and a few cheaper DVD players do it especially. Occasionally players with onboard decoders, can have some funny forced mode settings that might cause a problem as well as controlling output sound levels...

Good luck!

Unfortunately my master and wave levels are set at max and its still quiet...my turntables run through a mixer which im guessing is some form of preamp because i can then plug it into a normal input as opposed to the phono.

Also my DVD player is fine...thats the loudest of the lot...i only have to turn that up a 1/4 to get huge sound from ..im not sure if thats my bad or not , for making u think otherwise.

cheers n e way ppl

yeah a lot of mixers have pre amps inbuilt (to sole hte prob of ppl then needing to buy an amp) ons would know about pc stuff but as for TT I probably know a little more practical stuff with em (being a closet jockey)

i used to play once a month at what used to be the swingcat club on a night we called animate..originally it was just my mate(he played mostly hip hop, breaks and a little d&b) and myself(i play mostly prog house these days with some kinda techier trks) playing over 4 hours but after a while we brought in another mate to play too(he plays more dancy house)...

Unfortunately swingcat shutdown a cpl o months ago so im back to the bedroom and partys =(....ive got a long way to go b4 i try and get gigs at minke or sum where similar.

get 1200's eph

i bought stanton str8-60's....for about $550 each...thinking that there cant be $500 more value in a technics...especially only being a learner..but was i wrong...the technics are way way way better to play on...the pitch control is what won me over the most..having a quartz lock it wont waver a bit once you've got your tracks in time...the stantons will a little and the adjustment is finer on the 1200's.

keep an eye out for a bargain they do pop up.

What sort of music do u play eph?

Thats pretty funny shit hak =P

.. i can beatmix ..but i still fuk up =)...its more getting levels right and getting my vinyl collection a bit larger so that ive got more tracks that fit really nicely together.

actually, i have been on decks for about a year b4 i sold em (bad mistake)

i had 1210mkII's

as for styles at the moment im really getting into techhouse or really funky house, ala
Scumfrog, DJ Dan (mainly the US sounding house)

but my record collection has a little bit of Hard house, alot of trance anthems/classics, and alot of underground/progressive house.

im looking to get decks because mixing on a computer sucks compared to decks.

i can beat mix well fairly frequently, but pitch/key mixing has me lost, good track selection i suppose. Oh and breaks n dnb i dont even attempt.

aaah yeah pitch mixing is something you learn by listening to music more than playing good thing to do is to play your tracks and tape em then listen to em over and over and try to mentally mix the tunes in your head...i.e decide which to have similar sounds then mix em in...remember pitch mixing rarely allows you to beat mix em so use that x-fader :D

hehehe maybe i cant beat mix....i thought beat and pitch mixing were 1 in the same ie you use the pitch contrls to get the beats in time and then fade 1 track in and let the other finish or fade it out...well give me a name 4 that and thats what i do =P

i dont cut tracks in using the x fader...well very rarely..usually only when i fuck up and run outta track....i dont use the x fader at all i leave it in the middle and use the two level faders

and yeah eph...fuck drum n bass fullstop =)...cant stand it

oh and willy....you should see what the women are like at clubs these days...there were sexy chicks during disco......but now its great...at one show this bird we had a chat to was only wearing a feather boa on her top half...and she'd glued it to her boobs....but she used PVA glue....for those who dont know its water based (its the white shit u would have used at school)....although admittedly i wouldnt use construction adhesive to glue feathers to my knob either. She ended up spending the night sitting down keeping the feathers in place...unfortunately.

LOL what ptich mixing is is also called tone mixing its using the pitch of the tracks and getting them to compliments each other (your beat mixing bugs) pitch mixing is using tracks that have cords of the same of similar tone and mixing that way...you can change the tempo easily doing this as your not fucking around with the pitch control to slow the music down rather using the fact the tones are the same even if one tracks at say 140 bpm and the one that your introducing is 180 bpm (you need to use the builds to pitch mix) this enable a lot more freedom in what your playing and adds a larger range of music to mix aswel as your not limited by bpms as much (though dont go 240 bpm down to 120....ppl won tlike it unless your using it as a build)
