I assume this initial multiplayer (mentioned below) will be a DM scenario, rather than TFC?
GameSpy: Finally, can you share any details on what we might expect in the multiplayer arena from Half-Life 2?
Doug Lombardi: Only that at this point we're not releasing too many details about the gameplay modes. Valve is very committed to online gaming. Our Source engine was built to support a number of online gameplay modes, and Half-Life 2 will ship with full multiplayer gameplay for at least 32 players. •
I'm confused by the next two questions, one minute seemingly supporting VERY low end systems and then making the low end a PII800????
GameSpy: But not so much that gamers with a 2.1 sound system won't be able to enjoy the game?
Doug Lombardi: We're very much about scaling the experience. Half-Life ran on a Pentium 133 in software mode, and while that was obviously not the way I played it, it was playable and people still had a great time with it and voted for it to be "Game of the Year." So, for sound, we want to make sure that we can go to a simple audio configuration with a left and right (channel).
GameSpy: Is Half-Life 2 going to be the type of game that is really going to be pushing system requirements? Should the major computer manufacturers expect a bump in sales when the game ships, just because people will be upgrading their machines?
Doug Lombardi: I will sound arrogant as hell if I say yes! But I think that Valve tries very hard to support as far back with system as we humanly can, and in this case we're going back to a Pentium II 800 with 128 of RAM, but as get up to a Pentium 4 class you'll see better water and better effects. For folks who want the ultimate experience, they'll want the latest ATI card, and the fastest processor available from AMD or Intel.
P.S. A shop here in MElb has the HL2 release date as October 30.
Cheers,
Max
