I tried setting the new graphics card to overclock at an extra 100 Mhz (i think) and it appeared to get a worse result.

Max there's probably a slew of things you have yet to tweak on your system. It's not just your graphics card you need to worry about but the BIOS and Windows itself. TweakXP 3.0 is about the best start you can make and there's some serious tweaks you can perform in it. Holy cow are you overclocking the GT's core to 450Mhz? That's amazing! I got my score at 400/1100 so yes you have much more to do. My Brother's system is almost identical to yours and he's getting about 64,000 consistently.

You can start with your BIOS using this guide:

Then go to http://www.totalidea.com and grab TweakXP 3.0. Well worth buying.
