YOU'VE GOT TO keep caviar cool otherwise it becomes a very stinky mess somewhat quickly, and now Western Digital is applying coolage to its range of Caviar hard drives.
The firm said the "Cool" Caviars, which have capacities of up to 320GB, incorporate features to cut down operating temperatures, improving reliability.
The firm said that environmental features can reduce the life of hard disks, and it claims WD drives have the lowest power consumption of any desktop unit.
The drives are also quieter, said WD. The WD Caviars at 320GB have started shipping this week, while the Caviar SE320 will be in the shops next month, it said. The firm is taking pre-orders for these drives, and said if you buy by the end of the year, the units will be shipped free. The suggested price for the SE320GB is $249.
The drives have 8MB and 2MB buffers, and WD said it has improved the caching algorithms for the family of drives.
