The K-Lite Codec Pack is a free collection of codecs and related tools. Codec is short for Compressor-decompressor. Codecs are needed for encoding and decoding (playing) audio and video. The very user-friendly installation is fully customizable, which means that you can install only those components that you want.
There are three versions of the K-Lite Codec Pack: The Basic version, who fits on a single floppy disk, contains only the most essential codecs and related tools. The Standard version contains everything what is needed to play all the commonly used formats. The Full version contains even more codecs and also has encoding support.
The text in black applies to the Full, Standard and Basic versions, the text in green applies to the Full and Standard versions and the text in red applies to the Full version only.
Feature descriptions:
- MPC (Media Player Classic) 6.4.8.4 is a full-featured player which has internal decoding support for DVD, MPEG-2, MP2, MP3, AC3 and DTS. It also has internal support for opening Matroska and Ogg containers. Media Player Classic is also capable of playing QuickTime and RealMedia content if those codecs are installed.
- DivX Pro Decoding 5.2.1 is required for playing DivX movies.
- DivX Pro Encoding 5.2.1 is required for encoding movies in the DivX format.
- XviD Decoding 1.0.3 build 2004-12-20 is required for playing XviD movies. XviD is currently the most popular format.
- XviD Encoding 1.0.3 build 2004-12-20 is required for encoding movies in the XviD format.
- 3ivX Pro Decoding D4 4.5.1 is required for playing 3ivX movies and also supports other MPEG-4 formats.

- DivX ;) MPEG-4 Low and Fast motion 4.1.0.3927 is an old version (3.11) of DivX. Only required for those who want to use it to encode something.
- Cyberlink DVD decoder 6.0.0.1417 can be used to play DVDs with WMP (Windows Media Player) and is invisible if PowerDVD is installed. Not required if you use Media Player Classic, because it has an internal DVD decoder.

- DirectVobSub (VSFilter) 2.36 is a tool for displaying subtitles. - SHOUTcast Source 1.0.0.1 can be used to play SHOUTcast streams in any DirectShow enabled player.
- Matrix Mixer 0.30b can be used to amplify the sound of a video file. It also can mix stereo sound to multiple channels (useful for 4.1 and higher speaker sets).
- Morgan Multimedia Stream Switcher 0.9.9 can be used to switch between two audio streams in a video file that has two audio streams. These types of video files are not very common. Not required if you use BSplayer, because it has native support for more audio streams.
- FFDShow build 2005-08-22 is a DirectShow decoding filter for decoding various audio and video formats like DivX, XviD, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.263, H.264, MJPEG, CinePack, TrueMotion, DV, ASV1, ASV2, VCR1, VP3, Huffyuv, Theora, AAC, AC3, DTS, MP2, MP3, MP4 and TrueAudio.
- GSpot Codec Information Appliance 2.52 beta 1 build 2004-09-15 is a tool that can tell you exactly which codecs are needed to play a certain video file. This is very helpful when you have troubles playing a video file.
- Sherlock Codec Detective 2.00 is a tool which can generate a list of all installed codecs.
- VobSubStrip 0.11 is a tool which can strip languages from VobSub subtitle files (.idx and .sub files).
- GraphEdit build 041201 is a visual tool for building and testing DirectShow filter graphs.
- AVI Fixed 2.0 beta 1 can rebuild the index section of .avi files. This can make files with broken frames playable. In some cases it will also solve synchronisation problems and incorrectly displayed movie lengths.
- The FourCC (Four Character Code) Changer is a program for changing the FourCC of a video file, which is used to identify which codec should be used to decode the file. This power tool is for expert users only.
- Bitrate Calculator can be used to calculate the bitrate to use when encoding a movie.
