What's the best way to recover files off a hard drive that doesnt boot up?

I've lost my 8gig Steam folder and my personal folder which had my resume that I was just re-doing  It's a 40gig and it had 35gig of data on it, which is currently lost

I cant see the HDD when I go into windows explorer either :( although a few weeks ago this happened (I couldnt see the 40gig) so I turned off my computer and turned it back on again and it worked. So far this hasnt worked and I fear that I may have lost everything :(

Need help urgently.

Hmmm tricky one you say you couldent see your 40 gig before either so first step for me would be replace the IDE cable and go into bios and auto detect HDD's again. If it picks up both HDD's gimmi a yell back and we take it from there.

I left the comp on overnight to download cs:s and a map-pack and came back this morning and there it was! I've backed up all the important stuff that was on it onto my 60gig, I reset comp and it's still showing up. Wonder how long it'll stay like this for...!
