19 February 2006 - A Short WTF History

WTF Clan history
The following information is probably not 100% accurate due to my crappy memory and young age at the beginning. If anyone would like to write up more detailed history for any section email stephenl@swiftdsl.com.au
The Beginning
In 1997 VSOG (Victorian special operations group) was created. The clans founding members were onslaught, trauma, kraze, meanie and juggernaut. VSOG was a clan for the popular Team Fortress Quake mod. The founding members were not experienced in running a clan and I believe only 1-2 matches were played.
In 1998 VSOG's name was changed to Weapons Tactics Force. Unlike many clans at the time (and even now) WTF owned its own server at an ISP. WTF used this for running TFC games and running its website. During the next few years the clan played only TFC and CS.
CS out / DoD in
The Counterstrike division was run by several people during its time. Onslaught, the hard, trauma and raiden each lead at some stage (I can’t remember who else lead the division?) before it was disbanded. The reason for the premature end of the CS division was mainly due to a paranoia type atmosphere that had set in. Every time the clan lost a match there was the suspicion that opposition players were cheating. Although it can be assumed that very few players were actually cheating, there was times that it felt obvious that some opponents were using hacks like wall hacks and aim bots. Ultimately the paranoia was self destructive and it was decided that the division should be closed till there was some sort of protection against cheaters. I would like to remind cheaters that at the time WTF played CS there was little in the way of anti cheat software like punk buster.
It was around this time that Day of Defeat was first released for the Half Life 1 engine. A division was created and many CS members moved across to it.
The Heart of Darkness
WTF created a division for Operation Flashpoint upon it’s release in early 2000 but due to the lame multiplayer code it never really took off. We played a few matches but the division petered out without ever really being disbanded. A Battlefield Vietnam division was created shortly after it’s release. It was hyped up (mainly be trauma) but in some ways it was quite disappointing for a clan that was used to infantry level combat games. Due to the high player requirements of the game, WTF expanded too quickly. For a clan that prided itself on mature dedicated players it found itself with a huge roster of players that were difficult to manage.
The BFV division played many matches but ended up disbanding in a bang. I am sketchy on the details but many BFV players split from the clan. I assumed it was due to people simply not enjoying the experience of playing in the division. Training was scheduled for 2 times a week, as well as scrims and matches. Perhaps it began to feel more like a duty then a fun get together. During the time the BFV division was in operation the DoD division was largely inactive. Once BFV was out of the way many players believed this was a chance to get the DoD division back in action.
WTF continued to play DoD but it never really got going again and was mainly a weekly inter-clan scrim. In the time leading up to the much delayed DoD: source release the division was inactive again but once DoD: source was released and found to be lacking the division was unofficially disbanded.
Modern Combat
When news of Battlefield 2 was released it was again hyped by myself (trauma). There was a lot of discussion on whether WTF would field a team for the game, the BFV debarkle was still fresh in member’s minds and was afraid of going down the same road again. When the game was released it was a vast improvement on BFV, infantry combat felt right and the clan created a division. Many of the remaining BFV and DoD members shifted across to it.
WTF again found itself in a position of needing to recruit quickly to sustain a viable player list. When the GA ladder was opened WTF was still lacking the required level of players but soon recruited several more dedicated mature members.
Never Ending Story
It should be said that WTF has fielded a TFC division filled with dedicated players for its entire history and continues to today. Although it is doubtful a Team Fortress 2 will ever be released, they may move on to the HL2 Team Fortress Forever mod in the near future.
The Future
In my opinion WTF will play out the rest of the 2006 BF2 season and may play again in the next. Battlefield 2142 is a hotly rumoured sequel (the website has been registered by EA/DICE and leaked footage has been released) that WTF may move to. There are quite a few good games coming out like the new Red Orchestra but as many members work, study etc. it is doubtful a separate division would be formed anytime soon.
