PLAYSTATION 2 owners around Australia will be able to take their consoles online from October 10, with Sony announcing the launch date for its $2 million online gaming platform.
Known as Network Entertainment, the system has been under trial with "several hundred" users since March, a Sony spokeswoman said.
The commercial service will be available through a "network adaptor" module bundled with the Hardware Online: Arena game. The pack will also include a network access disk that will feature simplified setup for access through seven major internet service providers.
The bundle will cost $69.95. Sony's PlayStation website advises the network adaptor will be available on its own for $59.95. The network adaptor works through a dedicated port in the PlayStation 2 console.
Customers will need a broadband internet connection and PlayStation memory card to be able to use the online service. The service will not be available through satellite internet connections.
Sony said a total of 20 games equipped for the online service will be available by Christmas.
