SteamInstall_CS.exe - contains files needed for Half-Life and Counter-Strike. 379MB
http://games.bigpond.com/pc/resources/file...details&id=8300 (http://games.bigpond.com/pc/resources/files/?action=details&id=8300)

Team Fortress Classic Cache - contains the cache file so you dont have to download it from Steam. 48MB
http://media.ozfortress.com/steamcache/tea...2520classic.rar (http://media.ozfortress.com/steamcache/team%2520fortress%2520classic.rar)

Day of Defeat Cache - contains the cache file so you dont have to download it from Steam. 95MB
http://farbror.acc.umu.se/pub/steam/win32/...y_of_defeat.rar (http://farbror.acc.umu.se/pub/steam/win32/gcf/day_of_defeat.rar)

Installation Guide:

1) Download SteamInstall_CS.exe
2) (TFC Players only) Download TFC Cache
3) (DOD Players only) Download DOD Cache
4) Install SteamInstall_CS.exe. Remove previous Steam installs if you have any.
5) (TFC Players only) Extract the team fortress classic.gcf file into the C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps directory.
6) (DOD Players only) Extract the day of defeat.gcf file into the C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps directory.
7) Run Steam
8} Create/Login to an account.
9) Click Games, then right click Half-Life, and install.
10) It may ask for a CDKey if it doesnt find one in the registry.
11) Add the valve mods you want
12) (NS Players) Somewhere at this point, after you select the mods, it asks you which non valve mods you wish to add. Select Natural Selection. This will copy your ns folder to SteamApps\your@email\half-life\ns\

This will add Natural Selection to your games list, and allow you to play on Steam enabled Natural Selection servers. Currently there is only like 10 of em. I believe "Steam enabled Natural Selection servers" are servers which have had the steam update applied, and simply run natural selection as it did before, but i may be wrong.

13) Convert all your maps as prompted, if you wish to have them, and be sure to select "keep my files intact" if you wish to be able to play old Half-Life.
14) Right click every game->properties and set to Auto Update. This may crash your Steam. If it isnt responding, wait a few minutes and only then end-task it and restart Steam.
15) Ensure nothing is downloading on the monitor.
16) If all games are set to auto update + nothing is downloading on the monitor, your free to play one of your games. (Right click -> Launch)
17) Configs: Put them in the Steam\SteamApps\your@email.com\counter-strike\cstrike directory (or similar for other mods) This directory is created after you have played the respective game for the first time, or it may have been created if you converted maps over.

Remember: A lot of errors come about from not following the above steps. A lot of errors are also due to network congestion.

Adding other Mods after youve added Half-Life

If you didnt check mods you wanted to convert over, or for some reason it crashed and later would not give you the option, then its pretty simple. Go to your old Half-Life direction, and copy the mod folder (each "ns") from there to Steam\Steamapps\your@email.com\half-life\ folder.

Turning off mouse acceleration

» Start Steam
» Click on Games
» Right click on Counter-Strike, select Properties
» Click on Launch Options
» Add the parameters -noforcemaccel -noforcemspd -noforcemparms

Non Counter-Strike install option

For those who do not want counter-strike, i suggest doing the following in place of step 1) in main guide above

Only problem here is no mirror for half-life.gcf currently. So unless this happens, or you can source your half-life.gcf elsewhere, this is useless info

1) Download 500k installer (http://tfc.ipgn.com.au/files/steaminstall.exe)
2) Download:
half-life engine.gcf 4,643,939 16,777,216
half-life localized.gcf 9,391,774 67,108,864
half-life.gcf 172,793,956 440,401,920
platform.gcf 959,734 16,777,216

From: http://farbror.acc.umu.se/pub/steam/win32/gcf/

Continue from 2) in main guide, putting all you .gcf files you just downloaded in the same dir (SteamApps) as other .gcf files.

This is mainly for those who dont want to download extra if they arent going to use cstrike. For those who dont care, just get the SteamInstall_CS.exe as in the main guide, and dont check Counter-Strike when it asks what games to add @ step 11)

Thank you to Newkleer for this guide.

nice work ptp

i know how frustrating installing Steam is... and that walkthrough will relieve many people of many problems

my main problem with Steam is that is LOOKS like its doing nothing, but it IS, you have to be patient... valve need to fix that so steam tells the user what its doing.

also if Steam crashes for some reason, have a look in your ERRORLOGS folder in /Steam, this will give u some idea of what went wrong, obviously the most common one ppl get is:

Error:CJoinGameDialog::OnSteamError() : launch game failed, with steam error:
SteamProcessCall(WaitForAppReadyToLaunch,0xab0051, 0x1f6fc04,0x1f6fd0c) failed with error 1: Steam is busy, please try again later
