View Full Version : Starting a LAN game using steam?

Without looking into it too deeply the last time I tried to start a LAN game in the STEAM interface I couldn't find out how to do it, to check out the new TFC version.

So does anyone with a clue know where it's hidden in STEAM?

For the record I like the STEAM interface, but it does have bugs at the moment which make things a little annoying, and there's very few Oz sites supporting it so hard to find a local game happening. For a fairly early version it's on the right track.

Cheers,
Max

if you start up TFC from your games list and click on Create Game

that will start a LAN server

currently you will still need an internet connection...

apparently valve are releasing a lan party version of steam. also, they will be releasing another version for internet cafe places, whereby they are charged something like $10 per month per machine... I'll see if I can dig up the document.

I had another try at creating a LAN and it appears I was creating an internet server rather than a LAN, so I just passworded it to stop anyone joining which allowed me to check out the new map called ravelin, which looks interesting.

If I understood your post ons there isn't a way of just starting a normal LAN connection, without having been connected to the net?

Cheers,
Max

Offline/LAN play
Work on offline/LAN play is now nearing completion. To play any Steam game while not connected to the Internet it will only be necessary to let Steam finish downloading all of that game’s content, at which point you’ll be able to play games without connecting to Steam.

Looks like LAN is coming to a screen near you soon* :)

WON
Roughly 50% of the community has migrated to using Steam as the way to play our games. The WON authentication system won’t go away until Steam is ready for the entire user base. We don’t yet have an exact date when this will happen.

Seeing as there will be a couple of people on this forum who will NEVER use steam looks like WON is here to stay!
